Joe Rich Residents Taking Action
Joe Rich residents opposed to the application for the
creation of a gravel pit off Highway 33 and Pyman Road, will be holding a demonstration
this Sunday. Opponents argue the gravel pit with pose a direct risk to
public safety because of the extra truck traffic on one of BC’s most dangerous
highways. The proposed pit would be close to Kelowna.

Local MLA, Al Horning, says the government’s priority should be public safety.
“My view is that we’ve got enough problems with Highway 33 right now. It’s
a dangerous road. We get Chambers trucks going up and down there, it’s single
lane and people get mad and pull out to pass when they shouldn’t.”
Regional Director, Patty Hanson, echoes Horning’s feelings.
"We're really concerned about the gravel trucks going up and down highway 33 on top of the traffic going to Big White. It's going to create a hassle on a two lane highway. Black Mountain school is also concerned about more gravel trucks going up and down the highway," says Hanson.
She says water is also a growing problem.
"If the pit needs water, there are people on Huckleberry Road that run out of water and if the springs go dry, then we're all hooped. If the gravel pit is drawing the water from the earth, it will draw much more than each household."
Sunday’s demonstration begins at 9 a.m. at Highway 33 and Pyman Road (just outside of Kelowna city limits)
